Instagram Image Optimization Tips

Getting the right dimensions is only half the battle. Instagram applies its own compression to every uploaded image, which can soften details and introduce artifacts — especially in images with fine text, gradients, or high-contrast edges. These tips help you get the sharpest possible results:

Upload at exactly the target dimensions. When you upload an image much larger than Instagram's display size, Instagram downscales and recompresses it. By resizing to the exact target (1080×1080, 1080×1350, etc.) before uploading, you control the quality yourself rather than leaving it to Instagram's algorithm.

Use JPG at 85–95% quality. Instagram converts all uploads to JPG internally. Starting with a well-optimized JPG gives you the most control. PNG uploads are converted to JPG by Instagram, often with more aggressive compression than you would apply yourself.

Portrait format (4:5) maximizes screen real estate. A 1080×1350 portrait post takes up significantly more vertical space in the feed than a square or landscape post. This means more visual impact and longer viewing time per scroll — particularly effective for product photos, infographics, and text-heavy content.

For Stories and Reels, leave safe zones. Instagram overlays UI elements (username, like button, caption area) on Stories and Reels. Keep important content away from the top 200 pixels and bottom 300 pixels of a 1080×1920 canvas to avoid obstruction.
